Sustainability
Pomelow runs on Scaleway's servers in Paris, so the honest answer to “how green is Pomelow?” starts with how green Scaleway is. Here is what Scaleway publishes, and what we can't claim for ourselves.
- 1.37Scaleway's average energy efficiency (PUE) across its data centres in 2024, against 1.55 for the industry average it compares itself to. Lower is better: 1.0 would mean every watt goes to the servers themselves.
- 100%wind or hydro electricity at its Paris data centres, backed by Guarantees of Origin, according to Scaleway.
- ~15,000servers reconditioned by its “Transformers” programme, so they stay in service up to 10 years instead of the 5 to 6 it gives for the industry.
- GoldEcoVadis medal awarded to Scaleway in early 2024, placing it in the top 5% of the companies EcoVadis rates.
Energy
For 2024 Scaleway reports an energy efficiency (PUE) between 1.25 and 1.45 for its four Paris data centres. The most efficient, DC5, uses direct free cooling and reaches 1.25.
Its Paris and Amsterdam sites are listed as running on 100% wind or hydro power, backed by Guarantees of Origin: certificates that match the electricity a company buys with renewable production. They are a market mechanism, not a dedicated power line to the data centre.
Water
Scaleway says it does not use drinking water in its cooling towers, unlike many providers, and publishes a water-use figure (WUE) for each site in its yearly report.
Hardware
Besides the “Transformers” programme for servers, its “Nursery” programme reconditioned more than 12,000 hard drives in 2024.
Measuring and reporting
Scaleway publishes an annual ESG Impact Report: energy and water efficiency, CO₂ emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3, and hardware reuse. It offers customers an Environmental Impact Calculator, and advises ADEME, the French ecological transition agency, on the reference method for measuring the impact of cloud services (PCR Cloud).
Its parent group, iliad, has a target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative: cut scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 90% by 2050 compared with 2022. That target belongs to the group, not to Scaleway or to Pomelow.
What this means for Pomelow
Your email, chat, documents, files and their backups all run at Scaleway in Paris, so the figures above describe the infrastructure behind your workspace. Email, chat, documents and files run on services shared by all our customers, not on a dedicated server for each. This public website loads no third-party scripts, fonts or trackers.
What we can't tell you: we haven't measured Pomelow's own footprint, so we publish no figure for it. We don't claim to be carbon-neutral, certified or offset. Scaleway's numbers are Scaleway's: they describe its whole company, not the share Pomelow uses.
